California Coastal Ranch Compound
Marin County, California
This 15,000-square-foot family retreat, with sweeping views of the ocean, occupies a spectacular site defined by deep ravines, steep topography, and varied vegetation unique to the locale.
Inspired by the timeless architecture of early California ranch compounds, the eight-bedroom home is organized around a central courtyard featuring a mature California oak tree, corner fireplace and central fountain. This courtyard offers refuge from strong coastal breezes and serves as an intimate setting for entertaining. The primary living spaces are oriented southward to capture ocean views and sunlight, while a small pool house and lap pool are positioned to the west.
Two-foot-thick rammed-earth walls, black steel windows, and exposed wood timbers are seamlessly combined to create a warm yet contemporary architectural language—one that feels both grounded and timeless.
